Odor Problem? Ozone to the Rescue!

We love to solve problems for our customers! Recently, a customer came in complaining of a moldy odor in a five-bedroom house. We recommended a large ozone machine that is about the size of a desktop printer. The unit is electric, plugs in to any 110-volt outlet and over the weekend eliminated the bad odor. They were very impressed with the results. Ozone machines have been around for quite a while, but they’re still rather hard to find for rental. Fortunately, Northside Tool Rental has carried Ozone Machines for years.

But how do ozone machines work?

Ozone Machines are completely self-contained and portable. They are used to rid an enclosed space of odors from cigarettes, cigars, mold, mildew, foods, restroom odors, and almost any other odors that you can think of. These machines are able to eliminate odors and clean the air naturally. This goal is accomplished without the addition of sprays, masking agents, or other often harmful and irritating chemicals.

Ozone (O3) is a very chemically active, naturally occurring unstable gas made up of three oxygen atoms rather than the two atoms that make up the Oxygen (O2) which we breath every day. It works to eliminate odors through a process called oxidation. Ozone is a reactive molecule and is very quick to chemically react with particles that it comes into contact with in the air and on surfaces.  The extra oxygen atom in the ozone attaches itself to other molecules, chemically changing their structure to create non-offensive molecules – eliminating the smell. It basically removes odor by destroying the molecules, bacteria, and spores that cause unpleasant smells.

Nature creates O3 as a natural cleaner during thunderstorms. As an example, we’ve all taken a walk after a thunderstorm and experienced the clean, fresh smell in the air. That’s O3, or ozone, at work.
