Renting and Using a Generator

Electricity is such a normal part of our everyday lives that it’s easy to take it for granted! Sometimes, we don’t realize we need it until we are in a place where electricity isn’t readily available – or when there has been a power outage.

Renting and using a generator is perfect for situations where you need a temporary supply of power.

Renting and Using a Generator

Parties, tailgates, film and entertainment, construction sites, camping, and home projects are just a few of the places a portable generator can come in handy.

Choosing the right generator for your needs largely depends on the amount of power you need. To determine what size generator you need, simply add up the wattage of the appliances you need to power. Choose a generator which can produce more power than the minimum required in order to accommodate energy surges when individual appliances are turned on.

Size and fuel type are other considerations you should review before choosing your generator. A small electric generator is great for tailgating parties or camping since it doesn’t require a lot of space or regular fill-ups. A large generator is best for construction jobs or film and theater sets, as these can easily power heavy duty equipment.

Safety Tips for Generators

As convenient as it is to turn your generator on and forget about it, there are several safety tips to keep in mind while you are using a portable generator.

  • Since engines produce carbon monoxide, it’s important to avoid using a generator in an indoor or enclosed area. Always use an engine-powered generator outdoors.
  • Avoid using your generator in wet conditions, such as in rain or snow. Take steps to cover your generator if you must use it in wet conditions, such as putting up a canopy or tarp.
  • Never touch your generator with wet hands.
  • If using extension cords, make sure they are grounded and rated for the voltage of your generator.
  • When refueling your generator, allow the engine to cool for at least two minutes, and always use fresh gasoline. Do not store your spare fuel near the generator.
  • Do not operate your generator near combustible or flammable materials.
  • Avoid using your generator near open windows or doors. The carbon monoxide your generator produces can enter your home and pose a health hazard.
  • Make sure that your carbon monoxide detectors are in working order prior to using a generator.
  • If you plan to connect your generator to your house’s wiring, it’s recommended that you have an electrician install a power transfer switch.
  • Keep your generator as far away from your work area as possible. This will help reduce fire, carbon monoxide, and shock hazards.

By practicing a few key safety tips, you can enjoy hours of electricity while avoiding fire, electricity shocks, or carbon monoxide poisoning.
